OLFACTIVE FUTURES: IDENTITY

RE|GENERATION: Olfactive Futures

Regeneration: Olfactive Futures is a Speculative Design project. Situated in 2040, it is based on predictions about the future using various scientific articles.

The situation: During the last couple of decades, the pollution levels have risen and we were not able to combat this issue successfully. This led to people abandoning the villages and other remote places due to climate change, as well as the fact that life in a big city provides more job opportunities. Unfortunately, the cities are overcrowded due to climate migration and filled with synthetic odors that try to conceal the footprint of living as well as pollution odors.

The majority of people will work from home and spend a lot of their time in closed spaces, as the outdoors will be deemed unsafe for our health. Mental health problems are becoming a norm due to the feeling of isolation as well as the dis- tressing claustrophobic irritability or restlessness experienced when a person (or group) is stuck in an isolated location or in a confined space.

The Scentagram(s) are a range of diffuser-like products that were designed to make people feel more at ease and less isolated. They were created by psychologists, engineers, and perfumers in order to combat mental health problems. There are three types of Scentagrams: the kitchen Scentagram, the living room Scentagram, and the phone Scentagram.

The increase of pollution in cities, as well as the 2020 epidemic, will lead to people staying at home more and more thus making them feel isolated.

Not being able to interact with other people in person on a daily basis will lead to dullness in life, as well as a colorless way of living.

With the Scentagram, the individual is able to share their everyday life in an immersive way with others.
Smelling familiar smells such as your childhood home, or the personal smell of a loved one will bring comfort to people in their everyday life.

Dramatic Conflict and Identity

The individual can connect with their loved ones on a deeper level through the Scentagram.

Helps with relational identity- Identity and social identity and social identification.

Individuals are able to share their personal smell, the smell of their home and the smell of their food, which helps them connect with other people and control the way their identity is defined by others.
